The name Opa-Locka is an abbreviation of a place name, spelled Opa-Tisha-wocka-locka. The original name probably signified a wooded hammock in a swamp.
Brief History
Opa-Locka was founded and developed in 1926 by aviation pioneer Glenn Curtiss. The city was developed using the Moorish Architecture and even though the 1926 Miami Hurricane damaged the city, so many of the Moorish buildings were able to withstand the disaster.
